Latto (born Alyssa Michelle Stephens on 22 December, 1998), or Big Latto (formerly known as Mulatto), is an American rapper. She first appeared on the reality television series The Rap Game in 2016, where she was known as Miss Mulatto and won the show's first season.

Early life, Background and Education

Latto (Alyssa Michelle Stephens) was born in Columbus, Ohio on December 22, 1998, to Misti Stephens (mother) and Shayne Pitts (father). She moved to Georgia at age two, and was raised there, attending Lovejoy High School. Born to an African American father and white mother, Stephens was bullied in school for being "light-skinned", which inspired her to later adopt the stage name Miss Mulatto when she began her rapping career, after the "mulatto" racial classification.

Latto has a brother named Josh Hyland, and a sister named Brooke Hyland.

Career

At the age of 10, Latto decided to become a rapper. After that, she began to write rap music and took part in drag racing.

In 2016 she decided to take part as a contestant on the reality series The Rap Game. From this, she was known by her stage name Miss Mulatto and also won the competition. She also got an offer from Dupri with So So Def Records but she turned them down as the money offered was not enough.

In February, 2016, she released her first single "No More Talking". Her second mixtape was released in April 2017 Latto Let Em Know. It became successful, as it had some very famous songs like Response Diss. She had worked with many singers in that year like 2 Chainz, Future, Janelle Monae, and Jacob Latimore.

In June 2019, she also released her second extended play Big Latto which was preceded by Bitch from da Souf. Her single breakout reached 95 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

After releasing her 2019 single "Bitch from da Souf", Latto signed with RCA Records. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 2020, peaking at number 95. It was accompanied by a remix by rappers Saweetie and Trina. In 2020, Latto released the follow-up single "Muwop" (featuring Gucci Mane). Both songs were certified platinum and appeared on Latto's debut album Queen of da Souf, which was released in August 2020 and as a deluxe edition in December 2020.

In 2021 there was an announcement that Latto was changing her name to Mulatto there was controversy over that as that term was known to be a colorist.  In the year that February Latto was named MTV’s Global Push Artist of the month.

On September 24 she released her lead single that was named Big Energy and it was her second studio album.

Latto's mainstream breakthrough came with the release of "Big Energy", the lead single from her second studio album 777 (2022). Latto's highest-charting single to date, the song peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100.

Latto received nominations for Best New Hip Hop Artist at the 2020 BET Hip Hop Awards and Top Rap Female Artist at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards. She was a part of the XXL Freshman Class in 2020. She was named MTV Global's Push Artist of the Month in February 2021. She won the BET Award for Best New Artist in 2022.

Personal life

In 2017, Latto opened her own store, Pittstop Clothing, in Jonesboro, Georgia.

In May 2019, Latto was arrested for theft when she was mistaken for another woman. She released a track, "Fuck Rice Street", attesting to her innocence and anger toward the police.

In 2015, Latto was previously in a relationship with Bandit Gang Marco, a rapper. However, they separated later in 2017.
